What goes BOOM in the night?
About 10:20pm last night, there was a deep resonating boom and our house shook. There were fireworks going off in the distance and I hypothosized that maybe someone had set off a single (illegal), really big firework. Grant worried that our air conditioner had exploded or that something else in the house had exploded. We searched all around, though, and couldn't smell any smoke. Grant went outside to look at the roof as best he could. I checked our closets, remembering the horrible commotion made the last time one of our overcrowded wooden bars had snapped loose from its brackets beneath the load of hanging clothes.

Darcy was bleary-eyed...awakened by the noise that shook our house. She said she thought that Doug must have fallen out of bed! I checked. Doug was still in bed and sleeping so soundly that I had my doubts that he could have fallen out and then crawled back in without awakening!

I wondered briefly if there had been an explosion at the gas company (miles from us). A few years ago there had been an explosion there that lit up the whole sky and we could see the burning continue late into the night from our window...even though we live a long ways away. We looked off to the east...but, no glow was visible in the night sky.

This morning, Grant found out that a house in town exploded last night. We live more than six miles away, but still felt the reverberations from it. The house was empty at the time, so no one was hurt. (The owner was visiting friends in Lee's Summit at the time of the explosion.) They still don't know what caused the explosion...but it obliterated the home completely.

Update: The explosion was caused by a leaky propane tank. Nearly all of the homes out this way run off propane. Here are some photos of all that is left of the house (notice debri that was thrown up into the trees, even). (oops...blogger is having troubles again and uploads of photos aren't going through...will try to post the photos later!)

Comments:
Yeah--we heard that on the news last night. They showed a picture of what was left of it--not much!!
Glad it wasn't at your house. We always have much to be thankful for! Have a great day!

  • Annika is my niece. She was born with bilary atresia and had to have her first major surgery at the age of 6 weeks. Just before she turned a year old, she had to have a liver transplant. Two and a half months later, she had to have a second transplant. Now, five years old, she needs a third transplant and her family's insurance is nearly maxed out so a COTA fund has been established to raise the money needed.
(Please click on the little bear button above to donate to her COTA account or to view the raffles and other projects that are in progress to build the fund. If you have crafts, etc, that you could donate to be sold/raffled, this would also help greatly!)
