Three Peas in a Pod...
Familiar Scents
FYI: Background info. for those not from Grant's side of the family...Brianna is Rayna's 21 year old cousin and Glenn is her 23 year old cousin.
Now, on to the story! Last night, I told Darcy to please clear all the stuffed animals off their bottom bunk since Brianna was planning on spending the night with us and would be sleeping with Rayna while Darcy and Grant were out of town to record the band's next CD. (Mind you, there were only about 250 stuffed animals ON the bottom bunk! I think the girls must sleep ON TOP of their stuffed animals at night...or else, they must burrow beneath them because that is the only way THEY AND all those animals could ever reside in that same space!...and, even though Darcy objected to the contrary, I didn't think Bri would get a comfortable night's sleep either of those ways!) Anyway, as Darcy began clearing the bed, Rayna was going into melodramatics over the site of her 'babies' being exiled to the top bunk. Darcy tried to mollify her with the exciting news that BRIANNA would be sleeping in that bed with her the following night. Rayna was estatic to hear that and immediately ran from her room into Doug's room where she was overhead saying, "Let me smell your armpit, Douglas!" and, after a quick sniff, "You smell JUST like
Glenn!" Heaven only knows HOW that child's mind works!
(Least you take offense, Glenn, let me say that Douglas had just climbed out of the bathtub a few minutes earlier and had freshly-soaped scented skin!. He had also used bubble-gum scented shampoo...but I don't think he scrubbed his armpits with THAT! I have NO IDEA what was going through that child's mind!!!)
Someone turned 44 today!
The girls and I went up to Grant's workplace today to take him out to lunch for his birthday. While there, Grant showed the girls around. Rayna shook her purse so that the change inside rattled, so, one of Grant's co-workers asked Rayna if SHE was going to pay for lunch. Rayna replied, "I can't PAY! I don't have a DEBIT card!"
Astride Her Newest Steed...
But it was IN a plastic bag!!!
This afternoon as I was working on updating this blog, I heard a horrible commotion upstairs. Rayna was screaming and wailing…in obvious agony over some tragedy or another. Not terribly concerned, I continued my typing. A few moments later I heard what sounded for all of the world like a wounded elephant staggering down the stairs. It turned out to be my heart-broken four year old. As she came through the door, she was wailing so hard that she could hardly breathe, much less speak coherently. As I began piecing together the story between torrents of tears and gasping wails, Darcy barged in, to defend herself…
Rayna: “Muzzer, Darcy didn’t OBEY me! I told her ‘NO!’ and she did it anyway!”
Mother: “What did she do?”
Rayna: “She let the bug go-oh” (last word drawn out in a pitiful wail)
Mother: “Who had the bug first?”
Rayna: “Darcy.”
Mother: “Whose bug was it?”
Rayna: “Darcy’s.”
Mother: “Well, it’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”
Rayna: “But Darcy didn’t OBEY me!!! I told her let me have the bug! I wanted to KEEP it. She threw it outside. I WANTED it. I wanted to PLAY with it and keep it!!!”
Darcy: “That bug is GLAD I let him go!!!”
Rayna: (wailing anew) “Now you are EMBARRASSING me!”
Then, turning her back on her sister, “Muzzer, I wanted to keep HIM!”
Mother: “I don’t want bugs in my house.”
Rayna: “He was in a plastic bag!”
Turning FOUR!

(Rayna with Shadowfax and Begins)
The Palmento...

Rayna has had two stick ponies that she and Doug gallop about on for long periods every day...Begins and Diffy (known as Shadow before today!). So, when she went to Wal-Mart with her Aunt Jan and Uncle Eric's birthday money and wanted to spend it on yet ANOTHER stick horse, I tried to dissuade her. It was sitting there all alone in the clearance bin...the last stick pony. It was just downright ugly (I thought), but Rayna spotted it from afar and her heart was taken with it. "I WANT that palmento, Muzzer!" (It wasn't a 'palmento' or even a palamino...actually it was an appaloosa.) Rayna was bound and determined that she HAD to have the 'palmento'. "My other horses are lonely, Muzzer!" Picking up the 'palmento', I noticed that its head wobbled unsteadily on the stick and it no longer made any sounds when the button in its ear was pinched. This ugly horse was becoming even more undesirable in my estimation. But, Rayna was set that THIS specific horse was what she wanted to spend her money on. She didn't care if it was broken! "I'll just put it in my barn, Muzzer, and let it visit with my other horses!" (Up until that moment, I hadn't yet heard that her playhouse had been refurbished as a barn!) Giving up, I let her gather the Palmento up in her arms. Minutes later as she was about to pay for her Palmento, the clerk pointed out that the toy was already broken and gave me quite a look of disapproval when I shrugged my shoulders and said we were buying it anyway.
Rayna played and played with that wobbly-headed, silent, ugly horse that afternoon. Later, while she was napping, I replaced his batteries just to see if he could at least still neigh once in a while. To my surprise, the horse came to life, wiggling its nose as it neighed and then playing the theme from the Lone Ranger as its formerly wobbly head gracefully bobbed up and down in rhythm with the galloping music! What a bargain that clearance bin 'broken' horse was! Rayna, who LOVED the horse when she thought it was broken, was thrilled to see what all that horse could do! And so, Shadowfax took his place in the barn with faithful Begins and beloved Diffy.
Her Math Leaves Something To Be Desired...

Conversation from this morning…
Rayna (embracing her favorite stick pony): “Muzzer, this is Diffy. Brianna gave her to me. How long have I had this horse, anyway?”
Me (gazing at all the repair stitching I have had to do to hold that horse together): “About two years, I think.”
Rayna: “So I got Diffy in about 1916! Help me remember that!” And off she gallops on her pony!
Who's in Charge?
Rayna always likes to make sure that things will run smoothly in her absence. To this end, she always establishes among all present WHO will be in charge before she leaves the room to attend to other matters. Last weekend, she, Doug, and her daddy were watching a DVD. Rayna needed to leave to go to the bathroom, so she admonished her daddy, “Daddy, YOU be in charge while I am gone!” Grant nodded his head as he smothered his amusement. Rayna then turned her attention to Douglas and informed him, “I have to go. Daddy’s in charge now, Douglas, okay?”
Now ‘lest you think that ‘daddy’ was getting a raw deal, let me tell you about LAST night… Doug and Rayna were sitting on the floor coloring while I was sitting near them working on a scrapbook. Rayna needed to take a bathroom break, so she turned to Doug with utter seriousness and informed him, “Douglas, you be in charge while I am gone.” Doug nodded his head and Rayna, turning her attention to me, called out, “Mom, I have to go. Douglas is in charge now!” So, I now know where I rank in the hierarchy of family authority!
