  Sad Farewell...
Saturday morning, Darcy led Lightening down our quarter mile private drive for the last time. The horses were taken to their new home...a summer camp for homeless and underpriveledged children run by City Union Mission. The camp, run by the Kansas City organization is located on 500 acres in Warsaw, Missouri by Truman Lake. The grounds were beautiful. In summers past, City Union Mission has borrowed privately owned horses to let the children ride. Lightening and Begins (Shadow) are the first horses to be OWNED by City Union Mission (thanks to Dad C's gift of the horses to them). One of the camp workers who lives on the grounds year round (along with his wife and their four children)came to our home Saturday morning to pick the horses up. I was so impressed with his way with the horses...very calm and patient and extremely knowledgeable. They are in very, very good hands...and they will bring a lot of joy to kids in the years to come who don't have very many opportunies.

Lightening look a little sad, himself, as he peered out of the trailer, just before beginning his journey to Warsaw.

But, oh the joy both horses exploded with at the end of their journey!

Both, clearly, approved of their new digs (just a very large holding corral that they will live in a few days before moving on to the HUGE pasture wating for them). They will REALLY roll and neigh when they see their permanent digs!

...Good-bye, old boys. We love you.

Wow - that must have been hard - had you planned to do that?!?! It is never easy at our house when we have to part with pets!!

We knew well in advance that we were going to have to let the horses go...so the kids had time to process it and prepare for it. But, yes, it was hard. I think it was best for the horses...and for us, considering the reasons that we needed to let them go. It is a blessing that we got to have them and enjoy them for a year. Darcy really learned a LOT about horses and riding...something she wouldn't have been able to learn had we never have had the horses at all.

Tonight, Doug parted with his pet turtle. Guess we are back to just our three dogs.

  • Annika is my niece. She was born with bilary atresia and had to have her first major surgery at the age of 6 weeks. Just before she turned a year old, she had to have a liver transplant. Two and a half months later, she had to have a second transplant. Now, five years old, she needs a third transplant and her family's insurance is nearly maxed out so a COTA fund has been established to raise the money needed.
(Please click on the little bear button above to donate to her COTA account or to view the raffles and other projects that are in progress to build the fund. If you have crafts, etc, that you could donate to be sold/raffled, this would also help greatly!)
