  Hey, is it vacation time?
Where'd everybody go? OK, I guess I'll just have to hold forth a bit.

So, here it is:

The Story of the First Time I Met Darcy

I was 25 years old, and it was the day before my wedding. I was so very nervous, partly because I was realizing that I was 25 years old, and it was the day before my wedding. Perhaps your mom remembers that I had decided early on in my life that 28 was the earliest age for marrying.

I was also nervous because it was the very first time that I was to meet my future in-laws, who were flying in from Germany for the ceremony. I hadn't slept much in the previous few days getting ready for the big event, but the very most exciting news was not that I would get to meet my new in-laws, but that I would get to meet my new baby niece, Darcy, for the very first time.

There was an awful lot of confusion the day before the wedding, as Joerg's father's flight got cancelled and we were running back and forth from the airport trying to figure out how he was going to get to Indiana to see his only son walk the aisle. Your mom and dad and you were driving in from Kansas City, and it was a very long drive. I remember that they got lost in town, and noone was home to answer our phone and give them better directions. Somehow, when you all finally pulled into the driveway, your mom and dad were still happy and cheerful, despite being in the car for so long and having gotten lost with noone answering the phone at our place. It didn't take me long to figure out why they were so cheerful...

When I answered the door your mom and dad were standing there, but no baby! Then I saw that your mom, Monica, had her arms covered in a blanket. Your dad (acting on exact instructions from your Mom, I bet) dramatically swooped the blanket off her arms to reveal the cutest darned baby I had ever seen in my life! You! I swear you had the biggest grin on your itty-bitty face.

Your mom is always one to savor a dramatic moment, so I bet she knew exactly how thrilled I was going to be seeing you like that all of a sudden. I laughed and maybe squealed a bit, too. I mean, you were an awfully cute baby and I think there was probably lots of squealing going on everywhere you went. You reached your arms right out for me. Me! I was shocked and a bit flustered. Unlike your mom, I had never, ever babysat as a kid, and so never actually held a baby before. You were already a pretty smart cookie, so I think you sensed that I wasn't exactly baby-experienced and withdrew the offer. Still, Monica told me that I was the first person other than your mom and dad that you reached out for like that. It's possible that Monica just told me that to boost my confidence a bit so I wouldn't spend the weekend just smiling at your cuteness shyly from a corner. In any case, it worked and I was holding you by that very same evening.

You were the first baby I ever fell in love with. I've now had my own babies to fall in love with, and other nieces (and now a nephew! hooray!) have entered the family. But you were my first baby love. You were the first adorable little thing to convince me that motherhood was a great idea. And look how old you are now...You're still amazing!

  • Annika is my niece. She was born with bilary atresia and had to have her first major surgery at the age of 6 weeks. Just before she turned a year old, she had to have a liver transplant. Two and a half months later, she had to have a second transplant. Now, five years old, she needs a third transplant and her family's insurance is nearly maxed out so a COTA fund has been established to raise the money needed.
(Please click on the little bear button above to donate to her COTA account or to view the raffles and other projects that are in progress to build the fund. If you have crafts, etc, that you could donate to be sold/raffled, this would also help greatly!)
