The Palmento...

Rayna has had two stick ponies that she and Doug gallop about on for long periods every day...Begins and Diffy (known as Shadow before today!). So, when she went to Wal-Mart with her Aunt Jan and Uncle Eric's birthday money and wanted to spend it on yet ANOTHER stick horse, I tried to dissuade her. It was sitting there all alone in the clearance bin...the last stick pony. It was just downright ugly (I thought), but Rayna spotted it from afar and her heart was taken with it. "I WANT that palmento, Muzzer!" (It wasn't a 'palmento' or even a palamino...actually it was an appaloosa.) Rayna was bound and determined that she HAD to have the 'palmento'. "My other horses are lonely, Muzzer!" Picking up the 'palmento', I noticed that its head wobbled unsteadily on the stick and it no longer made any sounds when the button in its ear was pinched. This ugly horse was becoming even more undesirable in my estimation. But, Rayna was set that THIS specific horse was what she wanted to spend her money on. She didn't care if it was broken! "I'll just put it in my barn, Muzzer, and let it visit with my other horses!" (Up until that moment, I hadn't yet heard that her playhouse had been refurbished as a barn!) Giving up, I let her gather the Palmento up in her arms. Minutes later as she was about to pay for her Palmento, the clerk pointed out that the toy was already broken and gave me quite a look of disapproval when I shrugged my shoulders and said we were buying it anyway.
Rayna played and played with that wobbly-headed, silent, ugly horse that afternoon. Later, while she was napping, I replaced his batteries just to see if he could at least still neigh once in a while. To my surprise, the horse came to life, wiggling its nose as it neighed and then playing the theme from the Lone Ranger as its formerly wobbly head gracefully bobbed up and down in rhythm with the galloping music! What a bargain that clearance bin 'broken' horse was! Rayna, who LOVED the horse when she thought it was broken, was thrilled to see what all that horse could do! And so, Shadowfax took his place in the barn with faithful Begins and beloved Diffy.
